Hi all,

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for all your support in helping us raise £3200 for Cancer Research UK.

The New York Marathon was a huge challenge for Matt and I, but I'm pleased to say that we ran the whole way and completed it in 4 hours 51 minutes.

Here is the photo (click here to download pdf) to prove it - not the best but we had just run 26.2miles!

The money raised will hopefully go someway to trying to find prevention, treatment and a cure for cancer.

Both James (Maggie's newphew) and Charlotte Fox were a huge inspiration, and I'm sure were helping me get round the last few miles.

A massive thank you once again, and I would highly recommend the New York Marathon to you all!!!

Becs Leach.

Hi Natwest Netballers,

As some of you may know I (Becs Leach) am doing the New York Marathon on November 2nd.

Having never attempted anything like this before, I'm very nervous and scared but also extremely excited to be going to New York - especially as it is also my 30th Birthday!

Why you may ask yourself would someone put themselves through the knee and foot pain of running for 5 hours!!?
Well there's a very good reason....I'm hoping to raise lots of money for Cancer Research UK and The James Borondy Trust Fund.

James Borondy (Maggy Blagrove's nephew) was diagnosed with cancer last September after falling ill whilst on a family holiday in Spain. He was soon in and out of hospital having treatments of chemotherapy.
He wrote this poem just before Christmas which is when Matt (my husband) and I made the decision to run the New York marathon for him.

My Stay in Hospital

The Doctors are talking to Mum & Dad,

They look sad so I think the news is bad,

I’m lying in my bed, with a big pain in my head.

I’ve got a lump, Graham I’ve called it

He makes me feel, really really sick.

They put a wiggly line in my chest

So I don’t feel my best

Some of my hair has fallen out

I have no doubt, I just want to shout!!!

I’ve got to have some chemo

It goes in my line.

But Doctor Dave says in 6 months

I should be just fine.

I’m missing my school friend’s lots and lots,

But I can’t go to school cos they’ve all got spots!

So there’s a school on my ward that’s really fun.

I go everyday to play with everyone.

The nurses are great, they come every day

They check my bloods and keep infection away.

It’s nearly Christmas so I want to be at home

Not in hospital all on my own.

This poem is for all that have helped me

There are too many names.

But Merry Christmas and a

Big Thank You.

Love from James.

He was given the thumbs up and allowed home for Christmas. Unfortunately, just before New Year James had to go back into hospital as the cancer had returned. Throughout the next few months James put up a tough fight and kept all his family, and the doctors and nurses smiling. Sadly on May 3rd 2008 James could fight no longer and he peacefully passed away in hospital.

If nothing else gets us around the 26 miles – knowing that the money we are raising is going towards research that will stop other families going through what Maggy's family have gone through will definitely get us round.

If you would like to sponsor us please head to our justgiving page: www.justgiving.com/mattandbecsnewyorkmarathon - every penny will make the pain in the knees so much more bareable!

Also feel free to visit the James Borondy Trust Fund site - http://www.jamesborondy.co.uk/

Thank you so much and I look forward to playing netball with you all soon.

Becs.
